Dade PDs win Glickstein Award.


The Juvenile Division of the Miami-Dade County Public Defender's Office will receive the Public Interest Law Section's Hugh S. Glickstein Award for Child Advocacy Child advocacy refers to a range of individuals, professionals and advocacy organizations who promote the optimal development of children. An individual or organization engaging in advocacy typically seeks to protect children’s rights which may be abridged or abused in a  June 19 at the Bar's Annual Convention in Boca Raton Boca Raton (bō`kə rətōn`), city (1990 pop. 61,492), Palm Beach co., SE Fla., on the Atlantic; inc. 1925.  will make the presentation at a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m.

"This award is being given collectively to the Juvenile Division of the Miami-Dade County Public Defender's Office for its innovative efforts to protect the rights, health, welfare, and safety of Florida's youth," said Committee Chair Tracey McPharlin. "A few examples of these extraordinary people include Public Defender-elect Carlos Martinez and the Juvenile and Appellate divisions, including Marie Osborne, Kevin Hellmann, Tamara Gray, Andy Stanton, Shannon McKenna, and Valerie Jonas."

The division's accomplishments include:

* Drafting a bill and court rule banning the use of indiscriminate chains and shackling shackling

2. To keep in custody or temporary confinement:
 children in juvenile courtrooms and establishing a presumption of no chains absent a showing that the child is a risk.

* Successfully challenging indiscriminate shackling in Miami Dade's juvenile courtrooms.

* Launching the Juvenile Justice Charting the Path to Redemption Initiative, an effort to improve the efficiency of the juvenile justice system.

* Holding town hall meetings in Miami-Dade aimed at eliminating the schoolhouse to jail house pipeline.

* Educating the community through "Play It Smart" presentations informing teens about their legal rights and how to interact effectively with law enforcement, and through the "Consequences Aren't Minor" prevention program dealing with the consequences of an arrest or adjudication The legal process of resolving a dispute. The formal giving or pronouncing of a judgment or decree in a court proceeding; also the judgment or decision given. The entry of a decree by a court in respect to the parties in a case. .

* Establishing a specialized defense unit to advocate for children charged as adults.
