Dade MicroScan Inc. Receives FDA Approval for New Strep Testing Procedure.WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 26, 1996--Dade MicroScan Inc. has received FDA FDA abbr. Food and Drug Administration FDA, n.pr See Food and Drug Administration. FDA, n.pr the abbreviation for the Food and Drug Administration. clearance for the Dade MICroSTREP(TM) Panel, a new testing procedure for antimicrobial susceptibility of three different classes of streptococcus streptococcus (strĕp'təkŏk`əs), any of a group of gram-positive bacteria, genus Streptococcus, some of which cause disease. including Streptococcus pneumoniae Streptococcus pneu·mo·ni·ae n. Pneumococcus. Streptococcus pneumoniae Microbiology A pathogenic streptococcus with 90 serotypes associated with pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis Transmission Person to person Incidence , viridans streptococci Streptococcus (plural, streptococci) A genus of spherical-shaped anaerobic bacteria occurring in pairs or chains. Sydenham's chorea is considered a complication of a streptococcal throat infection. and beta-hemolytic streptococci. The new Dade procedure tests all major non-enterococcal streptococci with a single panel. The frozen microdilution technique of the Dade MICroSTREP Panel follows NCCLS NCCLS National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards guidelines and offers greater than 99% agreement without limitations to the NCCLS reference method. This procedure also is the only broth microdilution panel that incorporates the new NCCLS M100-S6 endpoints. The new method of testing includes all NCCLS-recommended primary antimicrobics on one panel. These ten antimicrobial agents provide more diagnostic information in a single procedure than has been previously available. "Streptococcal streptococcal /strep·to·coc·cal/ (-kok´al) pertaining to or caused by a streptococcus. Streptococcal (Streptococcus) Pertaining to any of the Streptococcus bacteria. isolates that are resistant to traditional antimicrobial therapy are being more frequently reported by clinicians," according to John Groat, marketing manager at Dade MicroScan. "The need for susceptibility testing to determine alternative treatments has never been greater," adds Groat. The Dade MICroSTREP Panel offers clear and concise endpoints which provide a definitive MIC value. The panels, which can be read manually in any microbiology lab, increase accuracy by reducing operator error. Dade MicroScan Inc., a division of Dade International, is headquartered in West Sacramento and is a leader in microbiology identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing.
