Coagulation disorders deal with disruption of the body's ability to control blood clotting. The most commonly known coagulation disorder is hemophilia, a condition in which patients bleed for long periods of time before
. A research agreement was also signed granting Dade Behring with the rights to results from future NHA research and development performed by RUNMC.

"These agreements reaffirm Dade Behring's commitment to developing innovative tests that impact the future of clinical diagnostics and patient care," said Jim Reid-Anderson, Chairman, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Dade Behring has been a pioneer of coagulation testing for more than thirty years and we continue to focus on developing our leadership position in this market by collaborating with institutions to further enhance our broad portfolio of tests."

Hemostasis is a complex process in which multiple components regulate blood flow and clot formation. Coagulation, fibrinolysis fibrinolysis /fi·bri·nol·y·sis/ (fi?brin-ol´i-sis) dissolution of fibrin by enzymatic action.fibrinolyt´ic

and platelet aggregation are a part of this process. The NHA is viewed by researchers to be important because it could provide insight into the whole blood-clotting process--simultaneously in one test. This type of test is commonly called a "global" test, referring to its potential for screening a broad range of coagulation disorders including thrombophilia and fibrinolytic fibrinolytic

Research presented at recent scientific conferences has shown a trend towards the use of "global" coagulation testing. The scientific and medical communities believe such methodology may enable clinicians to better understand the complete blood clotting process in a patient. In some cases, this could eliminate the need to isolate and test for separate components of the process3,4. It is also believed that this type of test may mimic the true in-vivo scenario of blood clotting in the human body.

"We are very delighted that Dade Behring is collaborating with us--together we expect to further extend the knowledge of global testing for thrombosis and hemostasis. The global NHA test not only has the potential to give answers about the clinical picture of the patient, but may also be used to monitor therapy efficacy and pre-clinical studies."

About Dade Behring Hemostasis (coagulation and platelet function testing)

With more than 30 years of experience, the company is committed to ongoing development of coagulation assays to assess bleeding and thrombotic risk. Dade Behring has many "firsts" in the coagulation industry, including pioneering the first routine coagulation test using recombinant tissue factor--Innovin([R]) reagent for the prothrombin time test. The company also developed the first automated ristocetin cofactor cofactor
