The victim Lee Bishop, 23, had been at an all-night drinking session in a house in Milbrook Avenue, Middlesbrough, when he was stabbed in the leg and shoulder with a pocket knife by Maxwell, his girlfriend Stephanie's father. Paul Abrahams, defending, told Teesside Crown Court that Maxwell has a mental illness which continues to cause him problems. "He lives in effect like a hermit hermit [Gr.,=desert], one who lives in solitude, especially from ascetic motives. Hermits are known in many cultures. Permanent solitude was common in ancient Christian asceticism; St. Anthony of Egypt and St. Simeon Stylites were noted hermits. , and avoids people at all costs," he said. "Prior to the commission of this offence he was not taking his medication properly, but he now knows what happens if he doesn't.
