However, the 77-year-old's dream of getting his long-awaited certificate finally came true when he graduated alongside his daughter Karen Wilkinson-Bell.

Mrs Wilkinson-Bell, 45, received her degree yesterday from Durham University's Business School and after staff there heard how her father had missed out, he was invited to join her at Durham Cathedral.

Mrs Wilkinson-Bell, regional director of the Business in the Community charity, picked up an MBA with distinction.
