Da Vinci of board trays demonstrated by Bowater.

A four-color ovenable board tray for lasagne under the Da Vinci name has been produced by Bowater Foil & Paper Products Ltd., Sunbury-on-Thames, England, to show off the advantages of ovenable paperboard.

Costing 25% less than CPET plastic, the Bowater trays offer even greater savings to frozen and chilled food processors by eliminating the need for outer cartons, the company says. Tray and matching lid both carry four-color graphics, including product photography, brand identification and point-of-sale data.

For the Da Vinci package, the back panel cooking and microwave instructions, storage instructions, ingredients list and nutritional data are framed in bright Italian theme colors of red, white and green. Sealing lids directly to trays creates attractive one-piece retail packs, which Bowater says are taking an increasing share of the frozen and chilled ready meal markets.

New sizes from Bowater range from 101mm rounds for single-serving pies large rectangulars (295mm x 185mm x 44mm deep) for family packs and catering multi-portions. There are now 20 sizes in all. Moreover, board grades have been increased, to 390 gsm for smaller trays and 500 gsm for larger ones, in order to improve tray strength and rigidity.
