The holiday event attracts thousands to the Oroville Dam Oroville Dam, 770 ft (235 m) high and 7,600 ft (2,317 m) long, on the Feather River, N Calif., near the city of Oroville. The largest unit of the Feather River project, the dam was built (1957–68) to provide electric power, drinking water, and irrigation for crest while others in boats watch spectacular skybursts in the night sky, reflected on the lake surface. The lake is filled nearly to its brim for this July 4 holiday. For this 10th anniversary event, the Department of Water Resources again joins with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Oroville, City of Oroville, State Department of Parks and Recreation and local businesses in cosponsoring the Independence Day show. Parks officials remind holiday visitors of the following safety rules: --Boats must stay outside the marked fireworks launching area. --Boat running lights are required from sunset to sunrise. --The speed limit on the lake is 5 mph starting at 30 minutes past sunset. --Boats must stay 500 feet from the dam. --If you boat, do not drink alcohol. --Ground fires are prohibited.
