DWR built the fish hatchery in the 1960s to mitigate loss of upstream spawning areas for construction of Oroville Dam Oroville Dam, 770 ft (235 m) high and 7,600 ft (2,317 m) long, on the Feather River, N Calif., near the city of Oroville. The largest unit of the Feather River project, the dam was built (1957–68) to provide electric power, drinking water, and irrigation for , key Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  facility for California's State Water Project. Anna Kastner of DFG manages the hatchery, which features educational exhibits and closeup viewing of salmon

During the Saturday festival, non-profit vendors will provide booths and attractions in the fish hatchery parking lot.

New to the hatchery venue will be a Salmon Theater where live theatrical puppet shows are scheduled to perform throughout the day. DWR will have its fishing simulator available for visitors to enjoy. Booths and displays will provide food and educational information about salmon life cycles.

Nature Center Events

Across the river from the hatchery, the Feather River Nature Center will once again showcase The First Salmon Ceremony, a Maidu Tribal ritual recognizing the return of salmon to the Feather River. Throughout the day, there will be Native American dancing, hand games, displays of Maidu spear fishing tools and dry-land demonstrations of spear fishing techniques Introduction

Fishing is probably oldest and one of the important activity of humankind. Ancient remains of spears, hooks and fishnet have been found in ruins of the Stone Age.

Downtown Craft Show

The downtown Craft Show will take place at closed off surface streets near Myers and Bird Streets. The historic State Theater downtown will feature a show of artworks by local artists, plus food booths and sales kiosks of festival participants. Events downtown will include a pancake breakfast, certified farmers' market, live music, craft fair, clowns and rides for kids, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Salmon Festival 5K Run

The festival's opening event will be a new competitive five-kilometer run through historic downtown Oroville, starting at 8 a.m. The race will begin and end at the Fish Hatchery Barrier Dam.
