DWR Announces Local Groundwater Grants.SACRAMENTO Sacramento, city, United States Sacramento (săkrəmĕn`tō), city (1990 pop. 369,365), state capital and seat of Sacramento co., central Calif. , Calif. -- The Department of Water Resources announces the award of grants totaling $6,200,000 under the Local Groundwater groundwater or subsurface water Water that occurs below the surface of the Earth, where it occupies spaces in soils or geologic strata. Most groundwater comes from precipitation, which gradually percolates into the Earth. Assistance Fund. Twenty-eight public agencies from throughout the State will receive grants to perform groundwater studies, and conduct groundwater monitoring and management activities. This marks the fourth year in which grants have been awarded under the program. Local agencies with $15 million in funding from the program have completed 44 projects and have 26 ongoing projects. A listing of the agencies and projects receiving grants may be obtained through the Division of Planning and Local Assistance Web site at: http://www.grantsloans.water.ca.gov/grants/assistance.cfm The goal of the Local Groundwater Management Assistance Act of 2000 (Assembly Bill 303) is to help local agencies better understand how to manage groundwater resources effectively to ensure the safe production, quality, and storage of groundwater in the State. Intense interest in the groundwater management programs by local agencies is reflected in the receipt this fiscal year of 72 proposals requesting nearly $17 million.
