 praised the program.

``Known for setting trends, all Angelenos have an opportunity to demonstrate to the country the wide-ranging benefits of green power,'' Richardson said.

Under the program, customers will pay an extra 6 percent - $3 on a $50 bill - to be assured their share of electricity comes from renewable energy Renewable energy utilizes natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tides and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, and hydroelectricity to biomass and biofuels for transportation.  sources.

In return, they will be provided with two energy-saving light bulbs that officials say will lower bills by $30 a year.

Freeman contends that global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution.  is a real risk and the utility industry shares a responsibility to reverse that and show leadership in promoting and implementing programs to reduce reliance on coal-fired generation plants.

The green power won't go directly to homes, but instead the DWP will purchase power from a company selling a renewable source. That power goes into the utility's power grid, and as the DWP buys more from renewable sources it will become an increasing portion of the total.

``Over time, it's going to make all the difference in the world,'' Freeman said.

Another marketing effort will pay social service and community groups $5 for every customer they get to buy green power.

``We realize getting people to pay a bit more is a very, very hard sell,'' Freeman said.
