DWP SAYS WATER BILLS MAY GO UP.

Byline: Troy Anderson Staff Writer

Coming on the heels of an 11 percent hike in water rates, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. It was founded in 1902 to deliver water and electricity supplies to residents and businesses in Los Angeles.  officials on Tuesday warned customers that their bills could go even higher because of a new court ruling.

Inyo County Superior Court Judge Lee E. Cooper on Monday ordered the DWP DWP Department of Work and Pensions (UK)

from 90,000 acre-feet annually to 57,412 acre-feet. As a result, officials said, the DWP will have to purchase the lost water from the Metropolitan Water District, which charges about $235 an acre-foot.

``They might see a temporary increase in bills, depending on how much additional water we'll have to purchase,'' said DWP Director of Water Resources Thomas Erb.

Cooper also ordered the city to pay a $5,000-a-day fine beginning Sept. 5 unless it obtains the proper permits and completes construction of a $15 million pumping station to divert California Aqueduct The California Aqueduct is a 444 mile (715 km)-long[1] aqueduct in the United States that carries water from Northern California to Southern California.  water to restore fish and other wildlife habitat on a 60-mile stretch of the Lower Owens River Owens River

The project is required under a 1997 lawsuit settlement that established that the DWP's groundwater pumping in Inyo County violated state law and caused substantial environmental damage to the Owens Valley.

``We think this is great,'' said Donald B. Mooney, the attorney for the Owens Valley Committee, a citizens group that has advocated restoration of the river for nearly three decades. ``This is the type of incentive L.A. needs because in the 14 years I've been involved in this we've never seen L.A. meet a deadline or comply with a court order unless they felt there was a real threat to them.''
