DWP SAYS LIGHT SNOW WON'T HURT L.A. WATER.

Byline: - Dana Bartholomew

Despite below-normal snowfall this winter, Los Angeles' water supplies should prove enough to last out the year, the Department of Water and Power announced Wednesday.

warned customers to continue conserving water.

``Although we have sufficient supplies to meet demands, we encourage our customers to participate in practical water management,'' DWP General Manager David Wiggs said in a statement.

``By monitoring water use, our customers will save money and allow water supplies to be extended for future use.''

About half the city's water comes from Sierra surface runoff Surface runoff is a term used to describe the flow of water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, over the land surface, and is a major component of the water cycle.[1][2] . The remainder comes from groundwater or purchases from outside sources such as the Colorado River Colorado River

River, south-central Argentina. Its major headstreams, the Grande and Barrancas rivers, flow southward from the Andes Mountains and meet to form the Colorado near the Chilean border. It flows southeastward across northern Patagonia and the southern Pampas.
 and Sacramento Delta.

The DWP has spent $100 million to encourage conservation through such means as ultralow-flush toilets and water-efficient washing machines.

On Wednesday, the department encouraged residents to personally conserve by turning off faucets while shaving or brushing teeth, taking shorter showers and cutting back on water used for landscaping.

Gerald A. Gewe, DWP assistant general manager for water, said despite the pinch water quality will remain high.

``Even though the runoff forecast is below average, we will continue to supply safe, reliable high-quality water to the residents of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. ,'' he said.
