Gaylord Wilshire (1861-1927), an Ohio native who made and lost fortunes in real estate, farming, and gold mining.  Temple emphasized the moral obligations to protect the earth and limit taking its resources from future generations, citing the Scriptures of both religious traditions.

The leaders from 30 church, synagogue and religious-based organizations viewed numerous exhibits featuring the most recent environmentally friendly and energy saving innovations. A fully equipped modern kitchen display included an energy-efficient refrigerator, washing machine (storage) washing machine - An old-style 14-inch hard disk in a floor-standing cabinet. Galiteva stressed that the sun, as well as wind and water, provides a major source of non-polluting, renewable energy, known as "Green Power."

"Saving energy and clean energy come with the Green Power program," Galiteva added.

Galiteva noted that energy efficient home appliances, such as refrigerators, cost the same and are often up to a third more efficient. Even small items, such as the compact fluorescent light bulbs, can save enough energy to offset the increased cost of the bulbs and the Green Power program.

Galiteva went on to emphasize that DWP sponsors numerous recycling programs, including greeting cards, post cards and eyeglasses eyeglasses or spectacles, instrument or device for aiding and correcting defective sight. Eyeglasses usually consist of a pair of lenses mounted in a frame to hold them in position before the eyes. . Odds and ends, such as styrofoam, are sent to children's centers where they are used for art classes.

Freeman urged the interfaith audience to help trend-setting Los Angeles set an example as a City that cares about the rest of the people on the planet.

"Encouraging congregations to adopt Green Power and energy-efficient technologies are the means to taking a proactive approach to save the environment for future generations," Freeman said.

During a question and answer session, Freeman assured the audience that all proceeds from the Green Power program go to developing and marketing more Green Power resources. DWP hopes to eventually bring clean energy plants to Los Angeles, which will help create jobs and enhance economic development within the City.

Freeman added that DWP could showcase its energy efficient technology, such as the electric cars, at events held at places of worship.

DWP plans to work with the participating leaders on an on-going basis. In addition, DWP will invite more leaders of Los Angeles' diverse religious communities to its future series of interfaith summits.

More than 45,000 DWP customers have signed up for its Green Power for a GreenLA program, making it the most successful utility-based green power program in the nation.

Information about Green Power and other DWP environmental programs, including Cool Schools, Electric Transportation, Solar Photovoltaics and Energy Efficiency, is available by calling 800/GreenLA or visiting www.GreenLA.com.

DWP customers who sign up for Green Power receive two compact fluorescent light bulbs initially, followed by two more in six months and home energy survey information. The free energy-efficient items can help offset the approximately $3 per month extra which the program costs the average customer. Customers who qualify for DWP's residential low-income discount rate can sign up for Green Power at no extra cost.
