DVG Research: US Public Wireless Network Carriers are in Danger of Losing Their Ownership of Mobile Communication Service Customers.

The current value-chain for mobile and fixed communication services in the US could be radically altered by the emergence of the pervasive communication marketplace -- leading to significant, new business opportunities and the growth of fundamentally-new product and service categories. This is one of several, key findings detailed in a research brief issued by the DVG DVG Divers Gauche (France, politics)

"Individuals are now deluged with communication connectivity that ranges from cellular telephone calls, instant messaging Exchanging text messages in real time between two or more people logged into a particular instant messaging (IM) service. Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or  and streaming media See streaming audio, streaming video and digital media hub.  to on-the-go access to legacy corporate databases through a variety of devices," said Adam Needles, director of DVG Research. "These diverse layers of personal and work-related communication networks are increasingly intertwined, and this is creating both opportunities and challenges to individuals' management of these connections. We believe the product of this environment is the emergence of a new class of end-user -- the `pervasive communication end-user' -- who demands products and services that enable this individual to intelligently and efficiently manage his or her increasing connectivity."

Based on a six-month marketplace study, DVG Research has been able to define and measure a distinctive US pervasive communication marketplace, which consists of the aggregate group of emerging products and services that are directed toward management of personal communication connectivity in a new and unique value-chain.

"The rapid growth in the number of pervasive communication end-users and the subsequent impact that this group will exert on the broader emerging communication technology sector, will change the nature of the value-chain that currently delivers communication products and services to these individuals," said Needles. "At a fundamental level, network connectivity will become a given and will increasingly occur not only via public-carrier networks but also via peer-to-peer and local-area connections. In this scenario we believe that core communication intelligence primarily will be contained in the embedded Inserted into. Custom-programmed middleware solutions have been developed for decades to enable one application to communicate with another that either runs on a different platform or comes from a  and network protocol interfaces that manage these wireless and wireline connections.  ownership of the pervasive communication end-user from public carriers."

"This is the sweet spot," said Needles. "This is where we see a rapidly-growing realm of new-venture opportunities."

DVG Research estimates that approximately one in ten individuals in the US are already using early-stage pervasive communication products and services, which include examples such as synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission.

Yet this group constitutes only a quarter of the total market opportunity for pervasive communication products and services -- pointing to what DVG Research believes represents a significant and growing market-segment opportunity within the aggregate, emerging communication technology sector.

DVG Research predicts that given current technology development trends there will be nearly 100 million actual pervasive communication end-users in the US by 2005.
