DVDs: BEST OF THE REST...THE OFFICE - THE COMPLETE SECOND SERIES (12, VHS (Video Home System) A half-inch, analog videocassette recorder (VCR) format introduced by JVC in 1976 to compete with Sony's Betamax, introduced a year earlier. pounds 14.99/DVD pounds 19.99) People either love this award-winning comedy or they don't get it at all. It's written, directed and produced by Stephen Merchant and its star Ricky Gervais, the man who was born to be David Brent. Slimy, sexist but completely convinced he is a cool geezer, Brent's main objective as office manager is to be popular, but his nose is pushed out of joint when the new staff arrive. Priceless, spot-on stuff. BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE columbine, in botany columbine (kŏl`əmbīn), any plant of the genus Aquilegia, temperate-zone perennials of the family Ranunculaceae (buttercup family), popular both as wildflowers and as garden flowers. - SPECIAL EDITION (15, DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc. The DVD represents the second generation of compact-disc (CD) technology. pounds 19.99) Michael Moore's distressing but ultimately brilliant film about America's obsession with guns and violence rightly won an Academy Award and was the first documentary to be accepted into the Cannes Film Festival Cannes Film Festival Film festival held annually in Cannes, France. First held in 1946 for the recognition of artistic achievement, the festival came to provide a rendezvous for those interested in the art and influence of the movies. . It's a sharp examination of the US's culture of fear, bigotry and violence, and this special two-disc edition features a commentary by prisoners with an introduction by Moore, a film festival scrapbook and loads more. A GUY THING (12, VHS pounds 12.99/DVD pounds 19.99) Julia Stiles is a damn sight more talented than a lot of her higher paid peers, yet she never really ends up in vehicles that test her. And, as usual, she shines in this, a silly but heart-warming comedy about a guy (Jason Lee) who wants to marry his fiancee (Selma Blair), but can't get a night he spent with her cousin (Stiles) out of his head. The script never really sizzles or surprises but there are a few laughs along the way and it's not a bad way to spend an evening. OLD SCHOOL (15, Rental/VHS pounds 12.99/ DVD pounds 17.99) Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell star as thirtysomething friends from college who want to recapture their youth, so they buy a house right next to their old campus. Free from responsibility, or so they think, they turn their pad into a party house for the local college kids and cause a right old rumpus. This is a decent idea that never really goes anywhere. There's the usual use of sexist stereotypes and fraternity jokes but, while Wilson, Vaughn and Ferrell try hard, the plot never really convinces. |
