This Is England (Cert 18)

THIS is the two-disc version of Shane Meadows's largely autobiographical snapshot of life in '80s Britain.

Haunted by the death of his father in the Falklands, adolescent loner loner Psychiatry A single young man estranged from society and family, who suffers from psychogenic pain, and tends to live 'on the edge', vacillating between aggression and depression; loners often have unrealistic goals, but are unable to work towards those goals  Shaun becomes isolated from his caring mother, Cynth. By chance, he forges a friendship with skinhead skinhead

Member of an international youth subculture characterized by hair and dress styles evoking aggression and physical toughness. Typical skinhead style includes shaved heads, combat boots, tattoos, and prominent body piercings.
rebel Woody and his merry band of misfits, including Milky and Boy George fan Smell.

The volatile dynamics of Woody's gang shift when jailbird Combo returns to the estate and begins to exert his influence, encouraging the impressionable youngsters to pledge their allegiance to the National Front.

Writer-director Meadows underscores the central character's rites of passage with earthy humour, and period detail is spot-on, from the fashions to an opening credits sequence awash with iconic images of the era. Stephen Graham, as Combo, is a brooding, intimidating presence while the supporting cast is equally impressive, the cameras capturing every nuance as the narrative careens towards its tragic conclusion.
