DUTCH INVESTIGATE CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS OF PREGNANCY DRUG.

Diethyistilbestrol (DES) may cause an increased risk of cancer during and after menopause. The hormone was banned for use during pregnancy in 1975 after research in the United States established that girls born to women who had taken the hormone had a higher rate of a rare form of vaginal cancer vaginal cancer Gynecology Any malignancy of the vagina, including nonepithelial lesions–eg, Sarcoma botryoides; vaginal adenoCA is linked to maternal use of DES during pregnancy. Now Dutch researchers want to establish any connection between DES daughters and the risk of cancer during and after menopause.  women whose mothers were prescribed the synthetic estrogen. The study will include a control group of 7,500 sisters who were not exposed to the hormone. All of the women will be given a questionnaire to establish known risk factors. The data will then be linked with data from the national cancer registry.
