DUSTBUSTERS RECEIVE GRANT.

Byline: Jim Skeen Daily News Staff Writer

Antelope Valley officials who successfully reduced dust storms that plagued the valley in the early 1990s will receive a $100,000 state grant to study how best to use plants to keep dust from blowing off abandoned farms, officials announced Friday.

The grant, provided by the California Air Resources Board California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the "clean air agency" of the state of California in the United States. Established originally in 1967, it is a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, an organization which reports directly to the California  to the Antelope Valley Dustbusters Task Force, will fund plant research conducted by University of California, Riverside The University of California, Riverside, commonly known as UCR or UC Riverside, is a public research university and one of ten campuses of the University of California system. , staffers at the Kearney Agricultural Research Station in Parlier in the San Joaquin Valley Noun 1. ``The final product of the Dustbusters' research effort will be a `cookbook' of dust suppression methods tailored for effective use on disturbed, arid environments,'' the Antelope Valley Air Pollution Control District said in announcing the award of the grant. ``It is anticipated that the Dustbusters' research will yield benefits to other regions in California impacted by the effects of blowing dust.''

The Dustbusters coalition of government agencies and other organizations was created in the early 1990s to find ways to cut down windblown dust. The Dustbusters' task force was created after the early '90s drought killed off nonnative vegetation on fallow farmlands, letting valley winds stir up giant dust clouds that turned the sky yellow and contributed to chain-reaction crashes.

Seeding programs spearheaded by the Dustbusters and a return to wetter weather curtailed the dust storms.
