The first study, directed Rox Anderson, MD, of the Wellman Laboratories of Medicine at the MGH, is aimed at optimizing methods of ALA application for human hair removal using ALA PDT. The second study, directed by Thomas Deutsch, PhD, also of the MGH Wellman Laboratories, will examine the use of ALA-induced fluorescence for the diagnosis of malignant bladder lesions. DUSA is developing ALA PDT as a method of hair removal following a human pilot treatment study conducted last year at the MGH by Dr. Anderson and Melanie Grossman, MD. The company is developing ALA for the photodiagnosis of bladder cancer based on the results of previously published independent European studies, which showed the selective accumulation of fluorescence in human bladder tumors and pre-cancerous lesions following ALA application. DUSA is planning to conduct its own clinical trials in 1996 on both of these indications. DUSA Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a development stage New Jersey company engaged primarily in the development of proprietary methods of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Photodiagnosis (PD) utilizing five-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). PDT is a two step medical treatment which combines the use of a pharmaceutical compound with exposure to light to induce a therapeutic effect. CONTACT: DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Mississauga D.
