Crowds lined the banks of the River Wear in glorious sunshine to watch more than 1,000 rowers compete in the popular annual event. Races took part every two minutes, between 8am and 6pm, on both Saturday and Sunday, with the finishing line close to Elvet Bridge Elvet Bridge is a mediaeval masonry arch bridge across the River Wear, in Durham, England. It is a Grade I listed building. History The bridge was constructed during the time of Bishop Hugh de Puiset (1153–95). in the city centre. The 176th Durham Regatta is the second oldest in the country, with only Chester Regatta longer established. It is a favourite among Durham University, Durham School and Durham Amateur Rowing Club, who have competed regularly since the early days. In recent years, the regatta has attracted competitors from across the UK, as well as crews from as far afield as Amsterdam.
