DUPONT ACHIEVES 1992 INTERIM VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS GOAL

WILMINGTON, Del., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- DuPont (NYSE: DD) has achieved the 1992 interim goal of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's 33/50 voluntary emissions reduction program.
DuPont U.S. manufacturing facilities have reduced total releases and transfers of the 17 priority chemicals by more than 34 percent from the base year of 1988.
The 33/50 program, initiated in 1990 by former EPA Administrator William K. Reilly, calls for the chemical industry to voluntarily reduce the emissions of 17 priority chemicals by 33 percent by the end of 1992 and 50 percent by the end of 1995. DuPont is on track to exceed the 1995 goal.
In a letter to EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner, DuPont's Vice President for Safety, Health and Environment Paul V. Tebo, said, "DuPont supports voluntary programs like 33/50 and finds that the cost effectiveness of emissions reduction is significantly higher than under 'command and control' approaches." He offered DuPont's cooperation with the EPA on similar programs.
EPA's 33/50 program blends well with DuPont's other voluntary goals that focus on reducing pollutants with the greatest potential for harm to the public and the environment. DuPont will achieve a 60 percent reduction in air toxics by the end of 1993 and a 90 percent reduction in air carcinogens by 2000 -- both compared to a 1987 base year.
