He is the current goalkeeper for "the bridge" team but, due to a controversial row with manager Tony Considine, he to offer the pair the captaincy on a joint basis after Michael 'Brick' Walsh held the role in recent years. "It is a unique situation," admitted Molumphy. "Firstly it's a fantastic honour and privilege. "Ken has been captain before and is a fantastic player. The most important thing is to get to a stage where everyone is a leader on the team. "The captain is about having communication in the team. The fact that there is two means there is more communication. If one guy can influence 15 then two can influence that 15 more. "There are guys around you and it is not just two leaders there are 15 leaders at different times. For five or 10 minutes if they go down a bit then another player picks it up. We will keep doing that." The Limerick tie is Waterford's first in the Championship since last year's 23-point beating in the All-Ireland final at the hands of Kilkenny. It's a game in which Molumphy says the players totally failed to perform, irrespective of Kilkenny's form on the day. "The first 20 minutes we were grand and there was only a point or two in it but after that we let ourselves down completely. "You could say tactics, but it was just ourselves. Normally when a team collapses it is a league game or a club game but that day we collapsed." Waterford restored some pride in beating Kilkenny in the League this year, when the final wasn't something that figured in their build-up. "We had a point to prove to ourselves because let ourselves down big time. We went out and laid into them," said Molumphy. CAPTION(S): LEADER Molumphy |
