Police were searching Thursday for a couple who has been impersonating sheriff's deputies, detaining San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 pedestrians and making off with cash.

The man and woman have targeted four people in the Valley since July 19, swiping about $2,000, police said.

None of the incidents have been violent, but the suspects -- complete with khaki khaki (kăk`ē, kä`kē) [Hindi,=dust-colored], closely twilled cloth of linen or cotton, dyed a dust color. It was first used (1848) for uniforms for the English regiment of Sir Harry Burnett Lumsden in India and later became the  get-ups, badges and caps that say "sheriff" -- pat down victims and go through their pockets, taking cash and whatever else they can find.

The man is described as white, 30, between 5 feet 5 and 5 feet 9 and weighing 180 pounds. The woman is described heavyset heav·y·set

The man usually is the one who confronts people on sidewalks while the woman stays in the car, described as a black foreign model with four doors.

The heists have occurred in the following locations:

July 19 in the 10800 block of Oxnard Street, North Hollywood.

July 31 in the 11200 block of Sherman Way, North Hollywood.

Aug. 14 in the 8900 block of Canterbury Avenue, Pacoima.

Aug. 25 in the 4900 block of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  Boulevard, Hollywood.

Aug. 29 in the 2700 block of Fletcher Drive, Glassell Park.

Sept. 4 in the 11200 block of San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , Sylmar.

It can be tough to tell sometimes who is an actual officer, partly because some work undercover, police said. If there's ever a question, ask to see a badge, picture ID and where the cop works.

"It makes it difficult for the public because people want to cooperate with police," said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Detective Dan Jaramillo, who is investigating the cases.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies wear uniforms with green pants and tan shirts, Deputy Maribel Rizo said. They wear badges on their chests along with a name plate and a gun belt.

They usually drive black-and-white patrol cars with lights and sirens. Undercover officers usually present their badges and will show photo IDs if anyone has questions, she said.

Deputies never seize property unless the individual is put under arrest before they are frisked, she said.
