DUO FIGHTS CRIME WHERE IT'S WORST : PALMDALE PATROL PROVIDES STRONG PRESENCE.

``We work a high-visibility patrol unit in the highest crime areas of Palmdale,'' Rosten said. ``We get to locations and do operations that other deputies may not be able to do.''

For certain crimes, the team may attack the problem differently and conduct undercover surveillance operations, switching from uniforms and marked cars to plain clothes and unmarked vehicles.

Last week, the team worked undercover on days rather than their usual evening shifts hoping to catch truants committing daytime burglaries.

``There's been a high number of burglaries on the east side of Palmdale over the past four months,'' Rosten said. ``That's what we're targeting.''

 officials, two homes in the the 3600 block of Saturn Avenue had been the source of problems for more than 10 years. Osterthaler and Rosten were able to take the time to build up enough evidence for a search warrant and arrest both owners.

They recovered 8 ounces of methamphetamines and recovered five stolen guns. One of the homes was later closed down by city officials for building safety violations.

``They've done an outstanding job,'' said Sgt. Bobby Denham. ``We needed a real strong law enforcement presence and that's what we're focusing on. It's proven to be a very effective tool.''
