If the Bowl Championship Series used graduation rates as part of its complicated formula for determining the No. 1 team, no one would care about this week's Tennessee-Arkansas game.

It's being billed as The Dummy Bowl. Both teams are undefeated - and uneducated.

Tennessee and Arkansas, both 8-0, each received black eyes in the latest NCAA NCAA

graduation-rate report released Monday. The Vols and Razorbacks have the two worst football-graduation rates among all schools ranked in this week's ESPN/USA Today coaches' Top 25.

A four-year graduation average was computed for the freshmen football classes of 1988, 89, 90 and 91. The average for all Division I-A teams is 53 percent. Arkansas was at the bottom of the list with only 20 percent who earned degrees within six years. Tennessee ranked 11th in the SEC at 27 percent.

It gets worse.

For the 1991 freshman class, the Vols rank last among SEC football programs with an 11 percent graduation rate. Arkansas is next to last at 14 percent.

The timing of the NCAA report couldn't have been more ironic for the Vols. It came the same day as Tennessee climbed to No. 1 in the BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957.  rankings.

We had 10 players out of 18 who have been active in professional football at one time or another. When those players often leave school, they usually concentrate on their careers before coming back to graduate.''

Of 18 freshman players who enrolled in the 1991 fall semester, only two had graduated by August 1997.

One footnote to the game: It pits ex-USC defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. Murphy was asked if he was surprised Michigan State backup defensive end Julian Peterson could record 11 tackles and three sacks in replacing All-Big Ten senior Robaire Smith, who broke his leg on the seventh play of the game.

``When I pulled and got (Smith), I thought that's who their bread-and-butter guy was. When I cut him and saw him rolling around, grabbing his leg, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of happy,'' Murphy said. ``But, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Briefly: Texas running back Ricky Williams needs 204 yards to pass Pitt's Tony Dorsett's career rushing record. It could be difficult against Texas Tech Saturday. The last running back to gain 200 yards against Tech was Texas A&M's Darren Lewis, who had 232 yards in a 28-24 victory in 1990. . . .

Nebraska is a 10-point underdog to Kansas State. According to America's Line in Las Vegas, the last time the Huskers were that big an underdog was the 1994 Orange Bowl against Florida State. . . . Texas coach Mack Brown is popular with the student body these days, and not just because the Longhorns are 7-2. When students began lining up at dawn Monday for tickets to the Nov. 27 Texas A&M game in Austin, some students waited as long as six hours to get theirs. Brown noticed the long lines and ordered 100 pizzas from a local restaurant. About an hour later, students were seen leaving with tickets in one hand and a box of pizza in the other. . . .

OK, Nebraska is down, but this will be the Wildcats' first real game of the season. They haven't beaten the Cornhuskers in 29 games. The Huskers are vulnerable. They've started three quarterbacks and haven't had two losses entering November since 1981.
