DUMAN'S SWEET RETURN.

Byline: Shawn Miller The Register-Guard

Derek Duman kissed a 180-pound pig on his summer vacation Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students are off for 3 months, depending on the country and district. .

"I could kiss worse things," said Duman, sporting a wry grin.

The senior quarterback for the Highlanders puckered up for the pig as part of a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  - an organization that has a special place in his heart.

in mid-November of his freshman year - a several-month period of difficulty for the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Student Body President.

During basketball tryouts, Duman's quads seized up, barely allowing him to move. The school trainer, unable to identify the source, urged Duman to visit a doctor. After tests revealed his blood-sugar level in the mid-600s (80-120 is normal), Duman was hospitalized for two nights.

"I had probably the worst freshman year ever," Duman said. "I could have put my head down and said, 'Why is this happening to me?' I'm trying to look on the bright side to focus the attention on favorable aspects of a situation; to minimize attention to possible negative or unfavorable factors in a situation.

Instead of packing up his athletic gear, Duman simply fought through every bit of adversity tossed his way. He even developed a somewhat happy-go-lucky attitude about the ordeal.

North Eugene coach Eric Johannsen, who was hired shortly after Duman's freshman season, noted that his senior quarterback - who is battling for the starting job with fellow senior Brandon Saboe - has developed into one of the team's sharpest minds and quickest bodies.

"I've just seen him go from a guy who was pretty undersized undersized

, lacked a lot of strength and speed because the diabetes hit him pretty hard ... to where he's now close to one of the fastest guys on the team," Johannsen said.

"It speaks volumes about the type of person he is, the character he has. It's tough enough for a high school kid to feel as though they can fit in these days, to have to deal with that but also be a community leader and being out there trying to raise awareness."

Duman spoke at an executive breakfast for local businesses early this summer, and he contributed more than $2,500 to the ADA Ada, city, United States

That's right, he donated money to kiss a pig on the top of its head.

"They had just cleaned the pig so it wasn't that bad," he said. "I was a little nervous at first. The pig was extremely nice."

Duman is soliciting sponsorships as ambassador for the ADA walk, scheduled Oct. 6 at Alton Baker Park Alton Baker Park is located in Eugene, Oregon, United States, near Autzen Stadium. It features duck ponds, bicycle trails, and a dog park, and directly touches the Ferry Street Bridge. .

"Everyone is starting to respect him more," said senior receiver Shane Kirkpatrick, who met Duman when they played on the same fourth-grade basketball team. "They've seen what he's been through. They've seen him overcome it. Everyone respects him a lot because of that."

This is the third year in Johannsen's system, so the student-athletes should be very comfortable with the schemes and play-calling. It is imperative that the players eliminate mental errors and mistakes.

Duman and Saboe combined to throw eight interceptions during league play last season. Smart decisions from the quarterback, whichever one is on the field at the time, will either guide or stall the offense.
