DUKE POWER CO. RESPONDS TO NRC NOTIFICATION OF VIOLATION

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) was notified today by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of a proposed violation at the company's McGuire Nuclear Station.
The NRC's notice relates to a leak of non-radioactive steam that occurred Aug. 31, 1993, as workers performed maintenance on a small steam line valve inside the McGuire unit 2 containment building.
Duke personnel responded immediately and effectively to the event. At no time was there any danger to the public and there was no release of radioactive materials.
"The NRC recognized Duke's response to the event as well as our corrective actions and reduced the level of the fine," said Mike Tuckman, senior vice president-nuclear generation department. "We are pleased by that recognition, but are never satisfied with less than perfect operations."
Duke has 30 days to respond to the NRC's notification.
