DUKE POWER BATTERY USAGE PROGRAM WINS GOVERNOR'S AWARD
CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co.'s (NYSE: DUK) Corporate Battery Management Plan was honored today with the North Carolina Governor's Award of Excellence in Waste Management.
A winner in the Case Study category, the company's battery program focused on better waste management of the more than 250,000 batteries the utility uses each year.
"This program is a stellar example of how Duke Power has addressed minimizing waste," said Tom Robertson, vice president-procurement, services and materials, who accepted the award from N.C. Gov. Jim Martin. "This effort, combined with other companywide programs in 1991, helped Duke recycle 70 tons of hazardous waste and almost 16,000 tons of non-hazardous waste.
Duke's use of batteries ranges from lead-acid batteries used in autos and at the company's power plants to nickel-cadmium batteries used in pagers and appliances.
Resulting in more than 180,000 pounds of hazardous waste each year, Duke Power put in place a structured program to recycle almost every type of battery the company uses.
Initiated in 1990, the program provided information and guidance for each type of battery type used -- including recycling techniques, packaging and shipping, available recyclers and applicable regulations.
This is the second Governor's Award the company has won. In 1989, Duke's comprehensive waste minimization programs was honored in the Significant Achievement category.
Duke Power is the nation's seventh-largest investor-owned electric utility, serving more than 1.6 million customers in North Carolina and South Carolina.
