DUFFY APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF ST. PAUL RE

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- James F. Duffy, whose 28 years' property-liability insurance experience includes executive positions in reinsurance, surplus lines and international underwriting, has been named president and chief executive officer of St. Paul Re, the reinsurance operation of The St. Paul Companies (NYSE: SPC) with offices in New York and London.
Duffy succeeds James White, who retired on Sept. 1.
Duffy previously was executive vice president of The St. Paul Companies. In announcing the appointment, St. Paul Companies Chairman Douglas Leatherdale said that moving Duffy to St. Paul Re underscores The St. Paul's intention to be a major player in the domestic and international insurance markets.
"I've selected Jim Duffy, one of our most senior executives, for this position to continue to develop a stronger worldwide presence in this important market segment," Leatherdale said. "Jim possesses the experience and energy to lead St. Paul Re at a time of pivotal change at that organization and in the reinsurance marketplace."
Leatherdale said Duffy will soon announce changes at St. Paul Re in New York that will enhance service to customers and improve efficiency, part of a process begun earlier this year by St. Paul Re to review operations and obtain the views of customers.
"St. Paul Re has a stated goal of being a successful lead underwriter in its varied lines of business," Leatherdale said. "St. Paul Re will distinguish itself through excellent service to its customers, backed by the strong balance sheet of The St. Paul Companies."
Duffy joined The St. Paul in 1980 as president of St. Paul Surplus Lines Insurance Company. He became senior vice president of St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company in 1984 and executive vice president in 1988.
Prior to joining The St. Paul, Duffy was an executive vice president of Cameron & Colby & Co., a surplus lines and reinsurance firm. He began his insurance career as an underwriter for Commercial Union.
Headquartered in St. Paul, The St. Paul Companies is a worldwide insurance organization whose members provide insurance underwriting and insurance brokerage products and services.
