The Capitals also became Anaheim's fifth straight victim.

each had a goal and an assist for the Mighty Ducks, who moved within a point of idle Winnipeg in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Anaheim's resurgence can be attributed greatly to Selanne, who had 12 points and 12 assists in his first 15 games since being traded from Winnipeg on Feb. 7.

He was blanked Tuesday night, as was 87-point man Paul Kariya, but it didn't matter.

"I felt that if we shut down the line of Kariya and Selanne, we would have a real good chance to win the game," Capitals coach Jim Schoenfeld said. "Our checking line did a great job. Unfortunately, they got their two goals against our scoring line."

The matchup worked in Anaheim's favor. The Mighty Ducks' second line produced both goals, and Schoenfeld was forced to keep his top scorers on the bench while Selanne's line was on the ice.

"That's a matchup we would take, if we could keep their skill people off the ice," Anaheim coach Ron Wilson said.

Stefan Ustorf scored for the Capitals, who outshot Anaheim 34-16 but missed a chance to jump past New Jersey into the sixth spot in the East. Washington was 2-0-1 against the Ducks since Anaheim's NHL debut in 1993.

"This was a huge game for us and even bigger for Washington, because they're fighting for a playoff spot and it was a home game for them," Wilson said. "That's the proud part - we did all the right things in the third period."

Hebert has started every game during the Mighty Ducks' winning streak, allowing only six goals.

"Guy was outstanding. He made the first saves, and the defensemen did a great job of clearing and knocking people out of the way," Wilson said. "After he made the first save, there weren't any rebounds, and the ones that were there we cleared safely."

Earlier, the Ducks traded right wing Brian Wesenberg to Philadelphia for center Anatoli Semenov and defenseman Mike Crowley.
