DUCKS SEASON BEGINS ON THE ROAD, AS USUAL.

Byline: Greg Christensen Staff Writer

It's enough to make a team wonder if the NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there  schedule-makers have something against them.

Originally, it was referred to as the "Challenge Cup"; the champions held onto the Cup until they either lost their league title to another club, or a champion from another league issued a formal . Goalie Guy Hebert Guy Andre Hebert (born January 7, 1967 in Troy, New York) is a former professional ice hockey goaltender. Always a proud American, he used the French pronunciation of his first and last names because it "sounded better." He played for the St. , the only Duck to have been on the roster for the six previous openers, didn't really want to discuss Anaheim's opening-night woes. But Hebert, who is 0-5 in openers, couldn't help himself.

``Someday we will win our first game,'' he said with a grin. ``Every year the odds get more in our favor.''

It sure seems so. The Ducks would tie a NHL record for season-opening futility with a loss tonight. The Minnesota North Stars The Minnesota North Stars were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League between 1967 and 1993. In the fall of 1993, the franchise moved to Dallas, Texas, where it is now known as the Dallas Stars.  lost seven straight openers from 1972-78.

Other Ducks haven't gone through what Hebert has and they insist they don't worry about such a streak.

``No points on opening night . . . nobody even talks about,'' said Teemu Selanne.

``It doesn't matter,'' said Ducks coach Craig Hartsburg. ``I don't think about the past, I just worry about Saturday's game. There's nothing I can do about the past.''

The Ducks might be in a state of denial, but they seem eager to prove themselves against a team that has dominated the series since Anaheim won the first three games between the two clubs back in 1993-94.

``It's going to be great,'' said Selanne. ``It would be a great way to build confidence, to beat Dallas right away.''

For Kariya, such confidence is a big factor in the Ducks taking the next step up the NHL ladder.

``Do you think Dallas or Detroit ever goes into a game thinking they are going to lose?'' he asked.

Perhaps that's why Hartsburg and the players aren't overly concerned about Kariya not playing.

``To be a good team, we have to play without our top guys,'' said Hebert.

Last year, Kariya played all 82 games. Selanne missed seven and the Ducks went 5-2 in his absence.

``If we can't miss him (Kariya) for a game or two, it doesn't say much about our character,'' said Hartsburg. ``A lot of other teams don't have (unsigned) free agents. You have to find a way to win.''

Selanne and Kariya, if he plays, will face a Dallas team that will be without two veteran defensemen. Craig Ludwig retired and Richard Matvichuk, a holdout hold·out
