ANAHEIM - Edmonton Oilers The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).  coach Craig MacTavish Craig MacTavish (born August 15, 1958 in London, Ontario) is the head coach of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers. He is a former NHL centre who played 14 NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues.  picked the perfect time to give goaltender Jussi Markkanen his first NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there  start.

Markkanen, a 26-year-old rookie from Finland, made his debut a memorable one Wednesday, stopping 27 shots and shutting out the accommodating Mighty Ducks 2-0 in front of 9,527 at the Pond.

Markkanen's effort in his first start made the 1,000th career game of Anaheim's Bryan Murray one the coach might just as soon forget, as he watched his punchless club continue its November swan dive to the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

``It's the same issues,'' said Murray, whose career record now is 491-383-126 with four teams. ``We compete, we work hard, but we don't score goals. And whomever whom·ev·er

The Ducks (7-15-3) are 1-8-2 over their last 11 games and have lost six out of seven. Anaheim couldn't feed off of the momentum it earned during a 3-2 win Sunday against the New York Rangers The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team based in New York, New York, U.S.A. Murray watched his struggling club record just 14 shots in the first two periods, and none of those would have been considered Grade-A scoring chances against Markkanen, who was giving starter Tommy Salo the night off.

``It was his first game, we should have been barraging him with shots,'' Ducks captain Paul Kariya said. ``Instead, we gave him an easy game.''

Markkanen's easy time ended in the third period, when the Ducks woke up offensively and Edmonton strayed from the stellar blue-line work it flashed during the first two periods.

Anaheim, which had two shots on two power plays during the first two periods, put ample pressure on Markkanen during four power plays in the final period. Anaheim held a 5-on-3 advantage for 48 seconds of the third period, but Markkanen kicked away solid chances from Jason York and Kariya.
