The Ducks' determination could be seen clearly on the bloodied brows of superstar winger Teemu Selanne, who had gashes over both eyes by night's end.

Selanne was struck by a puck during the warmup and by Nick Schultz's stick blade late in the second period, causing Selanne to miss a shift because blood poured from the wound.

He was on the bench when Ryan Getzlaf Ryan Getzlaf (born May 10, 1985 in Regina, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League.  gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead with 3:31 remaining in the second period.  change, a center ice scuffle between the teams and Selanne leaving the ice with a gash above his right eye.

All of which left a chanting, towel-waving sellout of 17,318 in a frenzy more than 30 minutes before the opening faceoff.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere led the Ducks onto the ice, a signal that he would be making his first start in the playoffs. He had served as Ilya Bryzgalov's backup after dealing with his newborn son's medical difficulties.

Next, the bad blood between the teams nearly boiled over, with Getzlaf and George Parros George James Parros (born December 29, 1979 in Washington, Pennsylvania) is an American ice hockey player of Greek descent, who plays right wing for the Anaheim Ducks. He also often assumes the role of "enforcer" for the team.  barking at Minnesota tough guy Derek Boogaard with nearly 7 1/2 minutes left in the 20-minute warmup session.

Bad feelings over Brad May's punch-out of Minnesota defenseman Kim Johnsson near the end of Game 4 were the top of much discussion going into Game 5.

May drew a three-game suspension; Johnsson was hospitalized and could not play Thursday.

Finally, Selanne was felled by an errant puck, which opened a cut above his right eye and needed "six or seven stitches to close," according to a team spokesman. Selanne was in the starting lineup, however.

Defenseman Chris Pronger gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead after only 62 seconds. Samuel Pahlsson beat Minnesota's Mikko Koivu on a faceoff, sending the puck back to Pronger above the left circle. Pronger then whistled a shot along the ice, through traffic and past goalie Niklas Backstrom.

The Wild tied the score at 1-1 on a shorthanded goal from Marian Gaborik at 15:42 of the second period.

But the Ducks regained the lead on Getzlaf's power-play goal at 16:29, with Boogaard still in the penalty box after drawing a double minor of high- sticking defenseman Kent Huskins in the mouth.
