DU PONT SCIENTIST GETS CHEMICAL PIONEER AWARD
 WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- George W. Parshall,

director of chemical science in Du Pont Central Research and Development, has been selected to receive a Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists.
Three academicians also were chosen for the honor: Ralph F. Hirschmann, University of Pennsylvania; Fred Basolo, Northwestern University; and Gilbert Stork, Columbia University.
The American Institute of Chemists, founded in 1924, has about 5,000 members of whom most are chemical scientists. The Chemical Pioneer Award recognizes chemists, chemical engineers and their associates for outstanding contributions.
The citation for Parshall marks his "insight and guidance in the field of organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis both for the chemical industry and the academic community."
The awards will be presented at the institute's annual meeting in San Antonio next February.
Parshall received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1954. He joined Du Pont as a research chemist in 1954, was promoted to research supervisor in 1965 and assumed his present position in 1979. He is a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
