 DU PONT MERCK RESEARCHER RECEIVES AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY AWARD
 WILMINGTON, Del., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- A researcher at Du Pont Merck, a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical manufacturer, has won the American Chemical Society's 1992 Eli Lilly Award in biological chemistry.
 William F. DeGrado, 36, of Moylan, Pa., won the award "for pioneering work in the de novo design of peptides and proteins," a primary discipline of research into new medicines.
 The Lilly award was established in 1934 to stimulate research in biological chemistry for scientists not over 36 years of age, and two recipients have subsequently won the Nobel Prize. Previously, DeGrado had won the 1988 Du Vigneaud Award for young investigators in peptide research and the 1989 Protein Society Young Investigator Award.
 DeGrado leads a research team at Du Pont Merck's laboratories at the Experimental Station in Wilmington.
 He has a bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College (1977) and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Chicago (1981). He has been on the visiting faculties at Harvard University, Johns Hopkins Medical School, City University of New York, the University of Pennsylvania, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Germany.
 DeGrado has more than 50 publications and has sat on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
 He joined Du Pont Merck as a research chemist in 1981 when the company was a part of Du Pont.
 Du Pont Merck, headquartered in Wilmington, is a worldwide pharmaceutical company estabished in 1991 by Du Pont (NYSE: DD) and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK). It had 1991 revenues of $795 million.
