DU PONT HONORS SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS
WILMINGTON, Del., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Four Du Pont (NYSE: DD)

scientists whose career efforts contributed immeasurably to the company's technical and business success were honored today with gold Lavoisier Medals for Technical Achievement.
The medals, the highest honor to be bestowed on scientists and engineers, were presented by Chairman Ed Woolard to Carl J. Heffelfinger, a leading world scientist on polyester film; Howard W. Jacobson, an authority on titanium dioxide technologies; Hein L. Klopping, inventor and developer of systemic fungicides; and Herman E. Schroeder, a pioneer research leader in the fields of rubber intermediates, dyes and synthetic elastomers.
Guest speaker at the ceremony was C.K. Prahalad, professor of corporate strategy and international business at the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Business Administration and an author and management consultant to major global companies.
Heffelfinger, who joined Du Pont as a research chemist in 1952, applied his curiosity and tenacity to improve the company's "Mylar" polyester film with new properties for a host of applications.
Jacobson, also a research chemist, joined Du Pont in 1955 and contributed to the fundamental understanding of the science and coating of fine particles. Most of his career has been devoted to enhancing the performance of titanium pigments in papers, plastics and pigments.
Born and educated in The Netherlands, Klopping immigrated to the United States in 1951 and joined Du Pont as a research chemist. His work led to the development of "Manzate" fungicide for fruits and vegetables, followed by the successful discovery of the first marketed systemic fungicide, "Benlate", and the fungicide "Curzate" which treats late tomato blight and late potato blight, the cause of the Irish potato famine, as well as the grape crops of Europe.
Schroeder, following the paths of Du Pont research pioneers Elmer Bolton and Wallace Carothers before him, came to Du Pont straight from Harvard University. He and his research teams were prolific, synthesizing many new dyes for the new synthetic fibers such as "Orlon" acrylic, "Dacron" polyester and nylon and producing many new synthetic polymers including "Hylene" isocyanates, "Adiprene" urethane rubbers, "Nordel" hydrocarbon, "Viton" fluoroelastomer and "Hypalon" chlorosulfonated polyethylene.
The Lavoisier Medal for Technical Achievement was created by Du Pont in 1990 to honor scientists and engineers whose careers were marked by creative contributions that resulted in a measurable business impact or significant technical achievement. Medalists are inducted into the Lavoisier Academy and memorialized by bronze plaques on permanent display at Du Pont's Experimental Station near Wilmington.
