DU PONT CLARIFIES FOURTH QUARTER CHARGES

DU PONT CLARIFIES FOURTH QUARTER CHARGES
WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont (NYSE: DD) today

announced an update on two nonrecurring charges which will be taken in the fourth quarter, one relating to a $1 billion cost reduction program announced in July, and the second relating to a product recall of "Benlate" DF fungicide.
These charges will total approximately $1 per share.
In July, Du Pont announced a $1 billion cost reduction program and indicated a $325 million after-tax charge (50 cents per share) would be booked in the fourth quarter. Additional business restructurings were forecast and are in process (Fibers, Imaging, Electronics and others). For the quarter, an after-tax charge of about $500 million (75 cents per share) will be taken. The increase from the previously estimated $325 million relates principally to the additional business restructurings.
In the first half of the year, Du Pont charged $41 million after tax (6 cents per share) relating to the recall. In its third quarter report, Du Pont indicated that changes in settlement estimates could result in additional future charges. In a recent review of the status of the product recall with claims adjustors and others involved, Du Pont has concluded that an additional after-tax charge of about $175 million (25 cents per share) will be taken for claims and other costs net of expected insurance recoveries relating to the recall. These provisions reflect our best estimate of the total after-tax charges relating to the recall.
