These are good days for Karrie Webb Karrie Anne Webb (born 21 December 1974) is Australia's most successful female golfer, and one of the top players in the history of global women's golf. She currently plays mainly on the U.S. , a 21-year-old Aussie who has a hard time realizing all that's happened.

``It's like a dream come true,'' she said.

Her two victories this year came in Florida - the HealthSouth Inaugural in January and the Sprint Titleholders in May. Now she goes after the du Maurier Classic, the final major of the LPGA season.

She will be tested beginning today by two Swedes - Annika Sorenstam, the U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. These include:

Neumann is a three-time winner in 1996 and narrowly missed winning the last two du Maurier Classics.

``I finished second last year and I was third the year before,'' said Neumann, walking from the putting green to the tee for a practice round. ``So if you look at it that way, it's looking pretty good.''

Jenny Lidback is 65th on the money list after scoring her only tournament victory last year when the event was held in Beaconsfield, Quebec.

Deep rough punishes those who wander off the fairways, although the course is relatively short at 6,324 yards.

Almost all the top money winners will be playing this week, with entrants from a dozen countries.

``This has been the story in the past few years, the global feel of the LPGA,'' says tour spokeswoman Beth McCombs. ``It's wonderful for the tour to have this international feel to it.''

Dawn Coe-Jones is the top Canadian in the 72-hole tournament. But she and others concede this year's du Maurier may be overshadowed by the Olympics.

``I don't think the Super Bowl would do very well against the Olympics,'' Coe-Jones said.

After more than a dozen years on the tour, she is thinking about calling it quits. Coe-Jones, 35, appears to be tiring of being a touring mom, who leaves her 9-month-old son in day care now offered by the LPGA.

``It's not easy,'' she said. ``If I don't see it working, certainly my career will be out the door.''
