The trial is at the Brewed Awakenings coffee shop in the Capital Center area of Providence, R.I. Service at this "hot spot" will be free for the first 30 days. Users will need a laptop computer or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  that is equipped with an 802.11b card. A limited number of wireless cards will be available. The 802.11b technology, also known as WiFi, has quickly become a networking standard allowing users with computers and personal data assistants (PDAs) enabled with a wireless networking card to get Internet access at broadband speeds.

"We are delighted to be one of only a handful of companies in New England to offer wireless Internet access utilizing 802.11b technology," said Dennis diBattista, president of Pawtucket, R.I.-based QC2. "We could not be happier that DSL.net, with its broadband expertise and nationwide footprint, is working with us on this trial."

Some industry experts estimate that half of the 10 million wireless U.S. Internet users already access the Web via the 802.11 technology standard. Service "hot spots" allow users the chance to experience wireless Internet at speeds significantly faster than the fastest wireless phones.
