 where China sustained over 200% growth to more than two million subscribers - a massive 845% growth since the end of 2001.

Percentage penetration of main phone lines, though, is the key indicator of broadband DSL's success. Globally, 3.2% of the world's main phone lines now carry DSL services. In Asia Pacific that figure rises to 8.35%, with North America in second place at 3.47% and Western Europe close behind at 3.45%. South and South-East Asia has now reached 1.22% and the rest of the world is below one percent.
