DSC enhances Mediaspan(TM) solution with HFC modem technology from Aware, Inc.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1996--DSC Communications Corporation today announced the signing of an agreement with Aware, Inc., of Bedford, Mass., to integrate Aware's hybrid fiber/coax (HFC 1. (networking) HFC - Hybrid Fiber Coax.
2. (hardware) HFC - hydrofluorocarbon.
) modem technology into DSC's Mediaspan(TM) product line. DSC's Mediaspan is a system that integrates and provides access facilities for voice and data traffic in HFC-based telecommunications networks. DSC (1) (Digital Signal Controller) A microcontroller and DSP combined on the same chip. It adds the interrupt-driven capabilities normally associated with a microcontroller to a DSP, which typically functions as a continuous process.  the agreement, Aware is developing hardware and software that facilitate the use of its modem technology in Mediaspan's telephony and data service delivery. Mediaspan utilizes DSC's Litespan(R)-2000 next generation access platform, a proven access solution which has been deployed by six of the seven U.S. regional holding companies.

DSC is incorporating Aware's Discrete Wavelet (mathematics) wavelet - A waveform that is bounded in both frequency and duration. Wavelet tranforms provide an alternative to more traditional Fourier transforms used for analysing waveforms, e.g. sound.  Multi-Tone (DWMT DWMT Discrete Wavelet Multi-Tone

Aware's modems are based on chipsets from an Aware/Analog Devices development partnership and use transmission bandwidth efficiently by dividing it into hundreds of subchannels that are totally independent and spectrally isolated. This multichannel Using two or more paths for transmission or processing. It can refer to a variety of architectures including (1) multiple I/O channels between the CPU and peripheral devices, (2) multiple wires in a cable, (3) multiple "logical" channels within a single wire or fiber or (4) multiple  technology enables Mediaspan to provide the fullest capacity, thus maximizing service availability and minimizing cost.

"To be fully competitive in this rapidly converging industry, service providers are seeking a cost-effective, yet robust system that meets today's standards for reliability and flexibility in a variety of infrastructures," said Dave Ehreth, vice president, DSC's Litespan division. "We have addressed this need by joining Aware's modem capabilities with our own base platform's extensive software-based control and management capabilities. Mediaspan enables carriers to provide revenue-generating services in a timely and cost-efficient manner."

Aware, Inc., is a world leader in last-mile technologies for broadband communications and high-speed access to the Internet. Aware's communications products allow users to maximize use of scarce bandwidth resources to efficiently and reliably communicate data on copper wire (asymmetric and symmetric high-speed transmissions) and hybrid fiber/coax networks.

DSC Communications Corporation is a leading designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer of digital switching, transmission, access and private network system products for the worldwide telecommunications marketplace. -0-
