In a joint project, the two companies have demonstrated the feasibility of IN services in an IP network by developing applications based on Java(tm) components that can launch DSC's INfusion(tm)-based intelligent network services from a web page using a standard browser.

This project with Sun and Strategic Technology Resources (STR) represents another step toward DSC's goal of IN/IP convergence enabling telcos and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to run the same service from any wireline, wireless or IP network.  service control point for service deployment, providers will be able to realize the benefits of IN, including rapid and cost-effective deployment of multiple interacting services.

"Sun shares DSC's vision of IN/IP convergence in the telecommunications industry and the key role of Java technology in realizing this vision," said Reed Hornberger, director of market development for Sun Microsystems. "By blending Java technology with IN services, DSC will be able to provide open access to its IN services from any Java technology-enabled device, including PCs, workstations and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), as well as facilitate integration with and access to core back-office business systems, such as legacy billing and provisioning systems."

"Using Java technology to invoke IN services brings the benefits of IN to the Internet and is the natural evolution of DSC's service convergence strategy. We look forward to working with Sun and industry-leading Internet Service Providers as we continue to expand this technology," added Jim Olsen, vice president of marketing, Intelligent Network Division, DSC Communications. "In addition, DSC is investigating the value of the JAIN (Java in Advanced Intelligent Network) initiative with respect to INfusion as an extension of the current Java technology alliance."

DSC's first Java technology-based IN services being prototyped in conjunction with STR, a Sun Authorized Java Center service location based in Chicago, include: -0-

-- Browser-based Provisioning

STR's expertise in using Sun's JavaBeans(tm) component architecture has been key to the quick creation of client (or user) interfaces to DSC's IN services providing access to core business applications such as order entry or customer care systems. As new IN services are created, JavaBeans components enable the rapid creation and deployment of the applications and interfaces needed to access and use these services. The goal is not only to enable the provisioning of the IN services but also to provide usage tracking and customer billing capabilities.

Using these representative services, an ISP can implement a trial of Intelligent Network-based services. The ISPs will then be able to work with DSC and the STR Authorized Java Center service location to enhance these services and to develop others for commercial deployment.

DSC's INfusion

To minimize the time required for introducing new services into a network, the intelligence for global services must be centralized and readily available. With the IN concept, this objective is met by providing dedicated nodes, which are easily accessible from anywhere in the network. The basic functions of an Intelligent Network include service creation, service management and service delivery. DSC's complete and compatible INfusion product family, delivered on Sun's Solaris(tm) operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system. , offers the ability to efficiently provide these functions. With the tools to manage and manipulate the network and a family of service delivery platforms, the INfusion products allow the cost-effective implementation of successful revenue-generating services from initial deployment to large-scale utilization.

The Road to Java(tm)

The Road to Java program is Sun's comprehensive strategy for extending Sun's ability to help businesses transform the vision of Java technology into business reality. Authorized Java Center service locations such as STR are central to that strategy.

With more than 200 Java Center service locations in 40 countries, the Sun Java Center and third-party Authorized Java Center service locations offer a world-wide network of experts delivering services to companies wherever they are in their development - Investigate, Evaluate, Architect, Pilot or Implement.
