It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. sheriff's station plans two checkpoints in the coming weeks at undisclosed locations -- one to catch drunken drivers, the other to get unlicensed drivers. By law, sheriff's deputies must announce they plan a checkpoint, but they do not have to say where it will be. Typically, locations are chosen based on their high rates of drunken driving activity. Motorists will be stopped briefly, checked for signs they are impaired and, if so, stopped and further tested. The check is designed to be random. The goal, officials said, is twofold -- to deter drivers from drinking before they get behind the wheel and to get drunks to become intoxicated. See also: Get off the road. On Jan. 25, a dual effort is planned for a checkpoint to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Deputies again will screen for drunken drivers, but they also will use the stop to check drivers to make sure they're properly licensed.
