Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

LANCASTER - The recent expansion of a program to take weapons out of the hands of criminals showed its worth Wednesday as 18 arrests were made and guns, drugs and ammunition were seized during an eight-hour sweep.

Dozens of law enforcement officers from various agencies assisted in the first Developing Increased Safety through Arms Reduction Management, or DISARM, operation in Lancaster.

``For the first go, it was pretty successful,'' said Sgt. Derek Yoshino of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Sheriff Department's Operation Safe Streets team. ``We'll be doing this (the sweep) on a monthly basis.''

Members of various Sheriff's Department details, including the gang enforcement team, partnered with probation officers to conduct compliance checks of 27 probationers who have criminal records consisting of narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required.  or weapons violations.

Deputies also recovered 3.1 grams of rock cocaine and nearly two pounds of marijuana, most of which was packaged for sale.

Nearly 300 rounds of ammunition and several stolen items were also recovered.

Fourteen of the 18 were arrested for felonies, including narcotics or weapons possession charges, while four were misdemeanor arrests and included warrants or possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. The majority of those arrested were also gang members or affiliates.

``There are a lot of people going to jail and a lot of weapons coming off the street,'' said Sgt. Steve Sylvies who heads the LAN-CAP team of the operation.

The operation was part of the DISARM program recently expanded by county Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich's office to the Antelope, San Gabriel San Gabriel (săn gā`brēəl), city (1990 pop. 37,120), Los Angeles co., SW Calif.; inc. 1913.
