) announced today that it has received a $7.6 million contract to provide motor control products for the U.S. Navy's Landing Helicopter Deck (LHD-8) amphibious assault ship.

For this award, DRS will design and manufacture Millennium Motor Control products, which comprise the company's new solid-state electronic motor control product line. The solution provided will feature a system that can be fully networked to the ship's LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  (local area network), allowing remote operation and monitoring, enhanced condition-based maintenance functions and reduced life-cycle costs. DRS's line of motor control products is being installed on all U.S. Navy combatants under construction.

DRS received the award from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Ingalls Operations, a unit of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC (Network Operations Center) A central or regional location for monitoring a large network. Also called a "network management center" (NMC), "service management center" (SMC) or "network control center" (NCC), a NOC may be used to manage a large enterprise network, ), in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Work for this contract will be performed by the company's DRS Power & Control Technologies unit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The equipment is expected to be delivered in July 2003.

DRS's Millennium Motor Control products are microprocessor-based and provide highly accurate measurement and control functions.

The Wasp class is the first to be specifically designed to carry a squadron of AV-8B Harrier II Short Take Off Vertical Landing jets. The LHD-8 will be distinguished by a new gas turbine propulsion system with a controllable pitch propeller A controllable pitch propeller (CPP) or variable pitch propeller is a special type of propeller with blades that can be rotated around their long axis to change their pitch. , in addition to other improvements to the weapon systems, and will provide reduced manning and life-cycle costs. Ship construction will commence in May 2003.
