) announced today that it has received the 2004 Herschel Award, one of the most prestigious awards offered for the recognition of technological breakthroughs. This is the second time the company has been selected to receive this award.

The award was received by the company's DRS Infrared Technologies unit in Dallas, Texas “Dallas” redirects here. For other uses, see Dallas (disambiguation).
The City of Dallas (pronounced [ˈdæl.əs] or [ˈdæl.
, for its Mercury Cadmium Telluride Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a crystalline compound formed from cadmium and tellurium with a zinc blende (cubic) crystal structure (space group F43m). In the bulk crystalline form it is a direct bandgap semiconductor. CdTe is also a strong solar cell material.  (HgCdTe) Electron Avalanche An electron avalanche is a process in which a number of free electrons in a medium (usually a gas) are subjected to strong acceleration by an electric field, ionizing the mediums' atoms by collision (called impact ionization), thereby forming "new" electrons to undergo the same  Photodiode A light sensor (photodetector) that allows current to flow in one direction from one side to the other when it absorbs photons (light). The more light, the more the current. Used to detect light pulses in optical fibers and other light-sensitive applications, it works the opposite of a  technology, used in advanced infrared imaging applications. It was presented to DRS at the annual meeting of the Detector Specialty Group of the Military Sensing Symposia (MSS), held on March 24 in Tucson, Arizona.

"We are extremely pleased to accept this special honor, which recognizes the outstanding work of our DRS Infrared Technologies unit," said Fred L. Marion, president of DRS's Surveillance & Reconnaissance Group. "This award highlights the importance of our avalanche photodiode infrared technology to the Department of Defense and underscores our leadership position in high-performance infrared detection for military applications. This and similar technology we provide significantly contributes to the strategic responsiveness, forward engagement and force projection capabilities of our military and is key to missions involving deterrence, maneuver, force protection and strike. Our technology is central to the military's modernization strategy and its goal to dominate the battle space."

The company's HgCdTe Electron Avalanche Photodiode technology is creating new opportunities through its incorporation into emerging Department of Defense applications, such as 3D Imaging LADAR LADAR Laser Radar
LADAR Laser Detection & Ranging
(three-dimensional imaging laser radar) for improved target identification at longer ranges. The importance of the company's avalanche photodiode infrared solutions for future defense requirements was a significant factor in the selection of DRS to receive this award.

The Herschel Award is presented at the annual MSS meeting in the years in which the selection committee determines that a significant technological breakthrough has occurred. MSS is a national organization that promotes the development and application of both radar and electro-optic sensor technology, primarily associated with military applications. The selection committee for the award consisted of influential members of the infrared scientific and customer community. The Herschel Award is one of the most prestigious awards offered by the MSS. It represents an outstanding endorsement of DRS's achievements in the development and implementation of its technology over the past several years.

DRS was awarded the Herschel Award in 2002, as well, for its Vertically Integrated Photodiode (VIP) and High Density Vertically Integrated Photodiode (HDVIP HDVIP High Density Vertically Integrated Photodiode (TM)) infrared detector technology.

DRS Technologies, headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey, provides leading edge products and services to defense, government intelligence and commercial customers. Focused on defense technology, DRS develops and manufactures a broad range of mission critical systems. The company employs 5,700 people worldwide.
