DRS Technologies Receives $44 Million in New Orders On U.S. Army Helicopter Program.

) announced today that it has received new contracts with a combined value of approximately $44 million to provide electro-optical components, spares, and support and repair services for the Mast Mounted Sight (MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) An enhanced transmission service that enables graphics, video clips and sound files to be transmitted via cellphones. Developed as part of the 3GPP project, MMS phones are generally backward compatible with SMS and EMS. ) on the U.S. Army's OH-58D OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Reconnaissance Helicopter (also AHIP)  Kiowa Warrior helicopters.

Installed above the rotors of the platform, MMS is an integrated, multi-sensor electro-optical sighting system using visible and advanced infrared technology to gather imagery and target acquisition data during the day or night under harsh battlefield conditions. Designed for stealth and extended stand-off range operations, MMS is considered critical in forward battle areas and reconnaissance missions.

The contracts were awarded to DRS by the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM AMCOM Aviation and Missile Command (US Army) ) at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. Work for these awards will be accomplished by the company's DRS Sensors & Targeting Systems unit in Anaheim, California, and DRS Optronics unit in Melbourne, Florida. Product deliveries are expected to be completed by July 2004.

The Mast Mounted Sight contains a suite of sensors, including a high-resolution television camera for long-range target detection; a thermal imaging sensor for navigation, target acquisition and designation; a laser range finder/designator for target location and guidance of Hellfire missiles and designation for Copperhead copperhead, poisonous snake, Ancistrodon contortrix, of the E United States. Like its close relative, the water moccasin, the copperhead is a member of the pit viper family and detects its warm-blooded prey by means of a heat-sensitive organ behind the nostril.  artillery rounds; and a boresight assembly that provides in-flight sensor alignment.
