DRS Technologies, Inc. (ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) A relational DBMS from Sybase that runs on Windows NT/2000, Linux and a variety of Unix platforms. ASE is a comprehensive and robust data management product with a long history dating back to the late 1980s. : DRS) announced today that it has received a contract to supply Advanced NightStar(TM) Binocular Systems for U.S. Special Operations Forces Those Active and Reserve Component forces of the Military Services designated by the Secretary of Defense and specifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations. Also called SOF. . These new image intensifying binocular systems can be used during the day or night, allowing troops in the field to complete 24-hour missions without the weight and bulk of separate day and night vision binoculars.

The $2 million contract was awarded to DRS by the United States Special Operations Command The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or USSOC) is the Unified Combatant Command charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Commands (SOC or SOCOM) of each branch of the U.S. military. DRS's NightStar(TM) Binoculars combine a third-generation Image Intensifier (I2) tube with an eye-safe laser range finder and a digital compass in a lightweight, handheld night viewing device. These systems instantly provide the user with target range on the eyepiece Eyepiece

 display and an RS-232 digital interface to transmit range, azimuth and elevation data to combat computers that determine target coordinates for fire control units. The Advanced NightStar(TM) Binoculars add a gated I2 tube capable of withstanding high light level intensity, allowing them to operate in bright daylight as well as at nighttime. The system provides three-power magnification and uses ordinary AA batteries. It measures target ranges from 20 to 2,000 meters and is accurate within 5 meters at maximum range.
