DRS Technologies' C3 Strategic Business Unit Receives A CMMI(R) Maturity Level 5 Appraisal from Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: DRS) announced today that its Command, Control & Communications (C3) Strategic Business Unit (SBU) was appraised as fully compliant at Maturity Level 5 for Systems, Software and Hardware from Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute (SEI(SM)). The institute's Software Engineering Process Management (SEPM) Program awarded C3 this appraisal using its Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI([R])) initiative.

The CMMI([R]) initiative is being used as a prerequisite and critical evaluation factor by the U.S. military for the acquisition of programs with significant systems and software engineering content. The Maturity Level 5 rating is the highest possible rating that can be attained from SEI's SEPM Program.

The rating confirms that the SBU's facilities have not only established effective, well-defined systems and software and hardware development processes that meet all of the requirements for providing products for the Department of Defense's mission-critical and industrial applications, but also are optimizing those processes using statistical methods and root cause analysis.

Conformance to the 22 key process areas prescribed by the Maturity Level 5 rating was appraised by the SEI using the Standard CMMI([R]) Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI(SM)) approach against the SE/SW v1.1 model. The SCAMPI(SM) method involves the examination of many types of evidence, as well as interviews with engineers, program managers and support personnel to demonstrate that the documented processes are being followed.

The appraisal process encompassed C3 facilities in Wyndmoor and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Gaithersburg, Maryland and Kanata, Ontario, Canada. The evaluation was conducted by an independent team led by an SEI-authorized appraiser from PYXIS Systems International, Inc. in Millersville, Maryland.
