Byline: Cynthia Teed Daily News Staff Writer

The drop-out rate among high school and junior high students in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. According to the figures released by the state Department of Education, 142 students of the district's 9,727 students left school last year without graduating.

The state labels the person a dropout when a student in any grade from seventh through 12th leaves school for 45 consecutive days, is younger than 21 and has not enrolled in another educational program leading to a high school diploma A high school diploma is a diploma awarded for the completion of high school. The figures show a 67.2 percent graduation rate last year for California's high school students.

Although the state has seen a positive trend in the dropout rate, the graduation rate - which only counts those who graduate in four years - was slightly below the level 10 years ago, Wexler said.

That could be because some students now need to stay in high school longer since core graduation requirements were increased in English, math and science, Wexler said.

``Since the core requirements have been raised, we notice students who had difficulty in those subjects before have even more difficulty with the increased requirements,'' he said.

And some students complete the core requirements but still do not graduate after four years of high school because they do not have the quantity of credits, 220, that are needed, he said.

A further drop in state and district graduation rates is expected by 2004, he said, when a statewide exit examination will be required, in addition to the district's competency COMPETENCY, evidence. Wexler said Hart officials have not yet decided whether to keep requiring the district test when the statewide test becomes a requirement.
